Know Virginia’s New Law!
Bring ID + Make Your Vote Count!
In 2012, Virginia’s legislature passed new restrictions on voters to prevent voters from exercising their voting rights. Groups from all over Virginia rallied to defeat the worst of those laws, but some changes were still made. Read below to find out what you need to know this fall to make sure your voice and vote count!
Acceptable forms of ID for voting:
-Virginia voter registration card
-Social Security Card
-Any other identification card issued by an agency of the Commonwealth, one of its political subdivisions or the United States
-Any valid student identification card issued by a Virginia institution of higher education
-A copy of a current utility bill with the name and address of the voter
-A copy of a bank statement with the name and address of the voter
-A copy of a government check with the name and address of the voter
-A copy of a paycheck that shows the name and address of the voter
-A copy of a concealed handgun permit
What if I don’t bring ID?
You will vote a Provisional Ballot. Your provisional bal- lot will be a paper ballot that is stuffed in an ID-ONLY envelope that won’t be opened or counted unless you provide an acceptable ID.
You must provide an acceptable ID to local election office by noon on Friday, November 9th in person, by mail, fax or e-mail.
Am I registered to vote?
Call the State Board of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 or www.sbe.virginia.gov
When do I vote?
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6th, 2012. Polling places are open from 6am to 7pm
Where do I vote?
Look on your voter registration card or look it up at www.sbe.virginia.gov
If I am in line when the polls close, can I still vote?
YES! You have the right to vote if you are in line by 7pm.
Can I wear campaign apparel when going to vote?
YES! You are allowed to wear apparel and buttons or stickers that contain a candidate’s name or political slogan to the polls.
What if the poll worker says I am not on the list?
Ask the poll worker to check the inactive voter list. If that doesn’t work, ask the poll worker to contact the local registrar. If the registrar is unavailable or cannot find your name, ask for a Provisional Ballot.
What should I do if I make a mistake on a paper ballot?
Ask for a replacement ballot immediately. You have the right to as many replacement ballots as you need.
What if I need help in the voting booth?
You have the right to have a poll worker, friend, or relative help you in the voting booth.
